  1. Alex did a nice job with the texture of the piece. The print also has a very subtle feel to it due to the color combination. It also printed nicely and has good contrast between fish and the background. The fish and whatever it's on pops out due to the nice contrast. The composition is nice because it's simple yet it still stands out

  2. Maddi,
You have a generally well put together piece that looks clean, organized, and I can tell what it is. You processed your reduction print correctly and the texture did not come out looking like a mess of mismatched prints and smeared paint. The detail on the subject matter is etched in very precise and turned out fantastic. I could have used a more vibrant color for attention but I still enjoy the color choice. I also would have enjoyed an outline that created more contrast and depth in the background.

  3. Katelyn Rowan: I loved your reduction print it had great texture and the layers really came out well. I think the layout and composition over all was set up very well. I know you had a hard time with the burnishing at first but it turned out beautifully. The orange color on top really made the whole thing pop out, you made a real eye catcher.

  4. Josh, your reduction print has good composition and it could have had good color and contrast if it would have lined up better. i like how you used different blades of the lino cutter to create different boldness in your cuts. your ink seemed to burnish well when you put it in the press. Einstein's skin and jacket could have stuck out more from the background to have better contrast.

  5. James: I like the use of color to give the piece dimension, though I'm having a tough time figuring out what you are actually portraying. The color choice was great. I like the sort of visual static in the background as well.

I love your use of texture in the sky and along the ground of your reduction print. I also love how the yellow behind the brown building creates texture in the building as well. The strong contrast between the yellow and brown creates the feel of the buildings being in different locations and distances from our vantage point. Using burnishing to create the texture that the yellow can be seen through the brown was a good choice. it looks as though you had trouble lining up your design each time but it creates layers in your piece that are very interesting. It makes you tact.hink about what you are looking at. It is such a simple design but has great impact.

  7. Pearl,
This makes me think of Slaughterhouse Five.. the tralfamadorian aliens looked like this, but it has an overall puzzling mood (in a very good way). The eye is the middle is the focal point, and it strikes the observer as almost eerie, staring into their soul? It gives an interesting feeling, and it's intriguing.
The composition of the piece keeps the eye flowing, the bright orange and yellow winds through and is balanced very nicely. The texture is very real in the sense that you used color to illustrate your depth. Not only did you have the brighter yellows popping through, (especially in the bottom left corner), you emphasized with deeper colors, like the teal giving accents. The colors played the major role in this depth and flow. The blue gives the yellow a beautiful pop. The bottom left is especially an interesting section in the way that it streams up through the image and fades away, it's calming to the eye. The texture in the hand with the few accent specks of blue was very lovely also.
The lineup of the edges was mostly well done, the only spot that catches the eye is the roughness of some patches (like a section on the background) that the ink might not have transferred as well as intended. This ended up working though because it added to the texture. The cuts in the linoleum were very obviously strong and sharp.
The colors in the eye also start to blend together because the teal and blue were so close, and it the "sharpness" of the piece gets a little bit blurred.
Overall strong impression on the observer. Well done.

  8. Steve: Your piece is very visually pleasing. The dark shades of ink in the background really bring contrast and attention to the bright yellow tones of the positive space. You filled out your negative space well in an interesting way that brings attention back to the positive space and focal point of your print. The use of complementary colors helps to blend together all the shades, and make the piece look much more cohesive as a whole. If I would suggest any change for the future, brighter shades of yellow and green in the positive space could help to bring further contrast and focus to the focal point. Overall this piece was very successful and shows interesting color arrangement in the background and foreground which brings the focus back to the focal point of the mid ground.
