  1. The main idea behind my design was puzzle pieces falling towards the lightbulb that's being held up by a hand. The theme behind it was connection through knowledge and experience. The puzzle pieces represent connection and the light bulb is the knowledge and experience. i used acrylic paint but it never really was finished.

  2. Katelyn:
The idea behind my project was the connection between two cities, full of people that have never met now being connected in order to help each other become better. I used the medias that I knew best to portray this. first i painted the background of the earth and the sky. I blended together red and orange to get a color in between them both for the sky and blended green and purple and added blue in places to make the earth. I then scanned my project into the computer and began working on it in photoshop. i added stick figures I created and changed the filters of both the sky and the earth. I then placed another photo and changed the opacity of it so the earth was still visible underneath it.

  3. My main idea was that people can connect from all over the world to help each other out, and Sister Cities International helps us do that. I tried to communicate that by having the banner connecting the two hands reaching toward each other. I used water color on the hands, the banner and sky, and used oil pastel for everything else. I transfered the logo and the words "connect globally, thrive locally." with turpentine. My favorite part are the clouds in the background. I blended them by using the lighter color. I also like how I put some magenta around the earth to contrast it from the background. I think I did well at shading the hands as well to make them not look so flat. I could have thought about my earth more and used a better reference photo.

  4. The idea for my design came to me after days of confusion looking for an idea. It was a last resort. The idea was representing connection; spider webs are connected. So I made a spider web. I never really committed or applied myself to the project and with the outcome you can tell. The background and foreground have no depth between them, the web lacks the texture to be looked at as a realistic web and the blurred pixels in the back turned into a mash of greens and grays. What it has going for it is the lines on the web all come together nicely and look like a web.

  5. I wanted to use repetition and symbols as the focus of my poster; arrows were my go to to symbolize "connection" of different cities. To emphasize the Sister Cities name, I threw that in 3 different times, winding through to guide the eye around the poster. With the arrows I used simple grayscale cities and pastel map pieces to bring in the idea of international connection.
The contrast of size and shape was a good concept (in the arrows), as was the repetition of the name. The use of the pen and ink looked sharp, but almost not enough. It was very thin, and in contrast with the heavy use of shape and color, the line thickness was lacking.
There seems to be a lot of color, it might have been better to stick to a smaller range, or to just pick a color theme instead. It was almost overwhelming. The white also leaves an empty feeling behind the cities, it leaves the piece feeling unfinished. The watercolor washes are evident, but seem very weak and the piece is lacking in depth and dimension. It just looks flat. A few areas of the composition also feel a bit too crowded, with maps touching cities and arrows all at once. While a good idea originally, the final product feels very overwhelming, crowded, and almost boring.

  6. Maddi Klasi: My idea was behind connection having strength and the fact that sister cities can rely on each other. I loved the chalk and the texture of the buildings thats really what I wanted to stand out but looking back I wish I had done more then just a silhouette. I also loved how realistic the arms were but I wish they were a bit stronger in color and didn't fade as much same with my hands. I really liked the color of the background though it had great contrast with the buildings but the saying wouldn't transfer with the turpentine so it didn't blend as well as I had hoped.

  7. My idea for the poster, although not a very original one, was global unity. The idea that even though thousands of miles may separate us, we can still be "sisters" with people we've never met. I used the skyscrapers coming from Nebraska and another city behind the horizon to show specific cities, and the hands shaking (cliché, sorry) to show unity between the two. I think the idea was solid, but I need to choose another medium which allows me to give the poster a cleaner and more detailed appearance.

  8. My idea for the sister cities project was to show connection on a global scale. The easiest way to depict this was to use a globe in the subject of my project. I used layering of colors in the background sea, as well as optical color mixture in the foreground land areas. I decided to show connection on a global scale by making the focal point of the piece in the clouds, showing the biggest connection we all share as humans on this planet, the life-giving air we breathe. I used different shades of acrylic white paint with wet brush technique to present the realistic image of clouds. I tied together the entire concept of my piece by making the focal point of it the word "CONNECTED" written across the globe constructed of cloud lettering. Finally I drew contrast to the strong white of the focal point by placing the piece on a solid black background, to draw the eye's attention closer to the detail of the piece itself. This use of text in my focal points brings the whole piece together and presents the them as connect globally, the motto of Sister Cities International.
