FINAL - PROJECT OF CHOICE

The Studio I Final Artwork was a choice project so students could fill in gaps in their portfolios.  They could select any media and genre used this semester.

Students needed to exhibit:

  • At least 50% of the final composition shows form.
  • Include good range of value.
  • Emphasis and Unity present.

Students also needed to identify three techniques they used specific to the media they chose.

  1. I enjoyed the final project. I did a kind of abstract ink and marker of Batman and Bane, from "The Dark Knight Rises." My shading was well done, I would only change how much shading I did. My technique was to make the picture gritty and real as much as the two characters deserve. I used a lot of cross-hatching for the shading. My use of space was better than my other projects, and I made my characters look as real as possible. I do believe that my project could possibly have been more 3D looking but I am happy with how it turned out.

  2. my final was a painting of my family's cabin. i like the colors i used in the cabin because it creates a good optical mixture, especially on the roof. the blue to white gradient in the sky looks well because it makes the sky not look so flat. If i could have done something better i would have made the bushes look more realistic and look more like what they do in the picture. also i would have put more detail into it and maybe better shading on the beams and grass. i like the difference in color between the cabin and everything else because it creates nice variety in color and shade. My painting would have been more successful if i would have taken more time and had a better reference photo.

  3. HAND OF FIRE.

I think I did a great job on the hand and how it reflects the light of the fire. I used scrubbing tecniques and tried to use contrast and value to really make it stand out. I love the color in it. I think the hand looks great with all the shading and highlights.

  4. Jenny Lee, Through the Lettuce Glass

The idea for this painting really just popped into my head after I had already picked my image for what I was going to do originally. On a whim I threw out the old idea and just tossed together a salad sketch and began painting. The forms of the lettuce didn't turn out in the sketch, but when I began painting I used different shades of green to model the leaves and show their shape. The veins of the lettuce also helped flesh out it's form. My favorite part of the painting is probably the tomato, because it's so round and perfect. The cucumber was difficult because the proportions were exact. The eyes really pop because I used a bright white to contrast the green/black shadow in which the pixie is hiding. Two things I would have worked on more had I more time would be the shape of the dish and the hands that are peeking out of the salad.

  5. Madeline Klasi, If grace was an ocean:
I loved my final. She really tested my skills with creating different textures and shades. Making her skin look kind of porcelain with shading her arms and legs drastically with the light in the water. Yet making her face while it was poorly lit was difficult. I chose to use a gradient in my background so the black wouldn't be so flat. I also worked really hard with the cloth working with the color mixture trying to see the reflection of blue from the water. I really did appreciate how the forms came together looking flowie. They really brought the eye through. Over all I loved the contrast between her and the water it was just enough for her to stand out.

  6. Josh's final shows good composition and form in the focal point. If I would change anything I would suggest that Josh work to add more detail to the negative space and the back ground. Over all the piece shows great color mixture, form, texture, and is appealing to the eye.

  7. One of the things I felt that I did well on this painting that I've never been able to do like this on a picture of a sunset is to just learn to work with the paint while it is wet so it blends better. I really liked how the sky gently blends into the clouds. I didn't use hardly any black in this painting even though that is exactly what it look like. I used my primary colors to make a nice dark neutral. The final touch on this peace was the reflection on the water and I felt that the high contrast really showed that it was water that it was reflecting off of.

  8. This is Steven on Davids account because mine wont log in. My final was decent yet rewarding because I created the image and have a passion for the subject I drew. Its nice and creepy looking and had good shading but the detail was lacking.
