  1. David,
The form and face itself turned out great. I feel that the beard is the focus, not the face. But I like how your shading and color choices make the portrait feel very 3-D. I think that the texture of the beard is very realistic; but at the same time I feel that the beard also makes the heads seem smaller than it should. I love the unique expression on the subject's face, it unique and fun. A very good piece indeed.

  2. Katelyn: I liked your technique, you laid the colored pencils down thick so you can't see the lines in the face and shirt. The face and shirt have great shading and modeling. You captured the light on his face well and you go the proportions spot on. Some things you could change would be the background; it feels rushed to me, and the hill is awkward. I'd just spend some more time on that. Same with the hair, I think it could have used a bit more work. -Sara

  3. Maddi,
I really like yours a lot. Everything is really done well. Your form is great, you look real. I think there could be a little bit more shading and shadowing in your face and neck. You seem to fade a little bit. Your texture is really great in your hair, you can see the movement in it. I like your technique, it is really awesome, very realistic. The color in your eyes and shirt make each other pop. I love your background. It is one of my favorite parts.

  4. Sara R: Your form was well drawn out but with a little more work his face could look a little more round. The shading and the texture in his shirt made it look very real. Also the lights and darks in his hair popped very well. I think his glasses would look more realistic if they had a shine from the lenses. Over all he was very well proportioned and I liked that you could read his expression well. Very good job Sara!

  6. Steve: I like the red color in her hair. and the shadow in the hair gives it depth. it could use a little more color in the middle of her face but i know your picture was light. the glare on her lips looks good. I would have added a background color to make her hair stand out more. fantastic job!

  7. To Jenny,

You have a great technique. I love the texture in the hair and the shirt. The way you used different colors to create shadows on the white shirt is great. Amazing optical mixture there and in the grass. I love the negative space. Some areas could have used a little more detail to really add to the depth. Great Job

  8. Pearl,
The perspective in your portrait, you can tell his face was closest to the camera. The shading and shadows in the shirt made it really look three-dimensional. I like the texture in the face and how you weren't afraid to use different colors in your shadows. The only thing that could maybe be improved would be how the face is proportioned. Overall reeeealllly nice job.

  9. Will, the coloration of the eyes in your portrait really draws the attention of the observer. The technique and mixture of colors in the hair is very apparent. The coloration and optical mixture of the bricks in the background really help define and compliment the rest of the portrait. The technique in the foreground does well to define the shape and form of the clothing. But the background could include more detail as to better represent form in the background. But other than that the piece was well done, and the resultant product is very appealing to the eye.

  10. Dear Josh,

Your portrait has a very soulful look and feel. I have nothing negative to say or even flaws to point out. I think I would enjoy the piece if it was done on a larger paper so you had more room for detail but your detail was still superb. A more interesting background would be desirable but it does not take away from the work. very well done
