  1. Steven: I love the texture of the fur on his head. I also like the good range of value and the contrast of all your lights and darks. The proportion seems off, I believe in the glasses. Other then that the black background with the black fur makes it fade and could use some highlights. All in all its a beautiful charcoal drawing.

  2. David,
The style of the puppy is great. The fur feels real and your technique to get there worked really well. Your proportions were very well formed and nothing was out of place. I like the fact that you can't see the eye, it works for the kind of fur you have. It just seems that even in real life you wouldn't be able to see his eye without moving his fur. I like this piece it's one of your best.

  3. For LeeAnne

I like the Arrangement, his position give him character. However, he could use more texture showing that he has a coat, and isn't just flat white and flat black, maybe a few more layers of lights and darks would have helped. The background detracts from the work I think, because it is also just two flat colors, maybe if you had added some texture showing grass or trees, and possibly a cloud or two in the sky it would have helped. His paw could use more shaping, it looks a little stick like, and his elbow stops abruptly and looks like it's missing some muscle.

  4. Dear Maddi,

Your albino deer looks very stern and sleek and is thoroughly enjoyable to the eyes. The shadows in the shoulder are not as flush as the rest of the body and the background lacks detail. I don't believe depth of field is an excuse because it doesn't look faded it looks rushed. Still it is a very well done piece of art.

  5. Pearl,
I feel that the picture over all is just beautiful. The detail in the tail is done really well, I like how its not just the normal colors. You weren't afraid of putting in colors like green. The shadows and comp really add depth to the picture. The highlights on the back and head really make him look real. I like how the black coat isn't just straight black, you added texture to it.

  6. Sara's animal portrait looks wonderful. I'm glad she used water color because that's the best way to capture an under water setting. The composition really makes your eye look around and I can really see the light going down into the water which also gives the picture motion. The border breaks up the space and just adds a different look than every one else's. The texture of the penguins looks very smooth and nice. If I had to fix one thing it would be on the right side. I would add more detail or do something to make that look a little more like the bottom of ice. Other than that it is beautiful and very interesting to look at.

  7. Katelyn,
The portrait of your dog turned out great! All of the proportions from her head to the body and eyes, they all fit. The highlights in the fur, on the face especially, really make it like real fur even if its really light. The shadows again look like shadows but you can still tell that it is fur. The color shift from that light blonde to brownish color was done really well! Also the texture in the fur also made it flow and look realistic.

  8. Will,
Your piece showed good shading and tone, using layering of whites and tints along with cool colors to develop the shading of the fur. The technique of your brush strokes are very fluent and excellently defines the movement of the fur and the form of all objects in the piece. The background shows strong contrast to the lighter positive space, further drawing the attention of the eye to the positive space. Finally, the choice of placement of the signature, I feel, was very successful and appealing to the eye.

  9. Pearl, I love the composition in your piece, doing that picture was a great choice. I love the expression in your dogs face. It shows very good technique, you use oil pastels very well. You did a good job at using blues and purples to make shadows, and used optical mixture to your advantage. I liked your choice of colors in the background, the bright blue blanket is eye-catching and provides contrast to the dog. Over all I think this piece was very well-done!

  10. STEVE, The cat looks amazing with the human characteristics. The form is great. The only thing is the cat looks a little distorted. You did a fantastic job shading and using a texture to make this picture stand out. GOOOOOOD Job. Great demonstration of value and contrast
