KENT BELLOWS

I think my pictures have stories behind them, but I like to leave a feeling of openness. I hope that things keep going in the viewer’s mind. There’s nothing more boring than a story too quickly told. Once all the elements of a story are nailed down, the viewer is left with nothing but the artist’s technique.” –Kent Bellows

  1. I think that the first photo is kind of mysterious just because it looks like the wall behind the man has bullet holes in it and he also looks scared. You really don't know why it is like this and I feel that this is the "openness" that Bellows is talking about.

That painting of food looks delicious!

  3. "Self-Portrait with a Wine Glass, Gluttony" I really like this one first of all, especially the way he did the smoke coming off the recently snuffed out candles. In the quote he says he puts a story in his picture and this one seems to have quite the story. He also says that he leaves a feeling of openness and I recognize that in the landscape of the background. At first I saw it as a window, but then I noticed the way it is sewn into the painting, and it looks more like a painting within a painting. Depending on which it is can change the story even though it's a minor detail. I find it very interesting.

  4. There is so much stuff on the table that goes off the page, it makes me look around and there's so many items for me to notice when I look around. The pumpkins and the painting in the background give the room a lot of depth.

  5. I feel Kent's artwork leaves more openness for questioning than it does tell a story. There is much going on and emotions are beautifully captured but it is not conclusive to any story.

  6. Each portrait has has its own story. There is so much content and detail that you could look at the portrait for hours and still not know the whole story. I think thats what he was saying in the quote, he doesn't want to tell you the whole story in a little detail, he wants to give many details so you get the whole picture. I love them, I think they are amazing.

  7. I like his quote a lot, I think he's right. I'd much rather look at a painting an try to find the meaning in it than be told what the meaning is. I think the meaning should be shown in technique, but that the meaning is more important. I think Kent's art is very deep and many pieces could be described as haunting. I also like that he talks about the artist being so involved in his art that every painting becomes a self-portrait, I think that's true for all types of artists.-sara
