  1. Jasmine,
The piece definitely has a dark and glowing mood to it. It makes me think of nature, fertility, and health with the deep prominent green in the background and the hints of leaves throughout. The composition was well thought out in the way that it gives the picture depth. The overlapping makes the picture appear as if it has actual dimension. There is almost a split between the right and left half. The right half seems to have strictness to it through the thinly drawn lines, and prominent edges. The left half is more blended and smooth. The swirls within the pottery piece are a nice detail to add, but they might stand out more if drawn a bit more thick and precise, with a softer edge. The shading within the round pottery piece is very well done, giving it a 3D appearance. The range between dark and light is nice, there is definitely a 1-10 value scale. The best part is the black. There is a true 10, and it’s not just hinted at, it’s actually spread throughout. This helps bring the viewers eye around the picture. Although the green in the back is very beautiful, the artwork looks empty in the back ground behind all the commotion in the middle, the eye would be a bit less stressed with the large dump of color if there was just a small amount of the media used back there. A very good job done with the separation of forms, nothing really blends together because the edges are definite, but a bit more shadow work would be nice to see. That and some areas, (such as the box in the lower left hand corner) could be a bit more blended. Some of the forms have a very solid shape, while a few of the bottles seem a bit skewed, so pay attention to form. Overall a very deep and well thought out picture, just pay attention to detail a and shading a bit more.

  2. Ali: the beauty of this piece done in charcoal is obvious. Her technique creates form that is nearly photorealistic. The range of value stretches all across the spectrum and give nice depth to the entire composition. Her use of highlight shade and shadow give a very realistic feel to the surrounding drapery. The only aspect of this composition that could use some tightening is the area behind the camera on the far left could use more definition from the shadow behind it, it got just a little bit muddy.

  3. Aysha: You're still life is amazingly well done. You covered the entire canvas and created something that goes beyond the paper. Your texture in the hourglass is very well done, and the photorealism of the camera is amazing. I can tell you utilized your reference photo frequently to get the symmetry correct for the camera. If an abstract photorealism is what you were going for in your art piece you nailed it. The only thing I could recommend is to really commit to the darks and create some really deep values and finite cast shadows. The shadows around the horn as well as in the middle could immensely improve your piece. Overall, very well done!

  4. Aysha: The still life you created is almost like a photo that was taken. Your value is very nicely spread out, and the highlights on the hourglass are jaw dropping. I can really tell that you used your reference photo, and took the time to capture the small details on the camera to bring it to life. And the bottle that is place in the back has a nice dark value that brings the camera and hourglass forward, as if i could just reach out and grab them right from the page. The only thing I recommend is the drapery and the details. I know you chose a silky material, and i feel like there should be much deeper, darker details, that way it really comes to life on the page. But over all, really nicely done, Aysha :).
